Silence: A Sign Language Translator Revolutionizing Communication for the Deaf

Breaking Barriers and Enabling Fluent Communication

Silence is a groundbreaking device designed by Guangpeng Yue to bridge the communication gap between the deaf and the hearing world. Inspired by the challenges faced by the deaf community in daily communication, Silence aims to make fluent communication a reality by seamlessly translating sign language into spoken language through the use of innovative technology.

Silence stands out among other sign language translator devices due to its unique features and strengths. Unlike traditional translators, Silence incorporates holographic projection to provide a visual representation of the translated sign language, enabling the deaf to better understand and communicate with others. This cutting-edge technology makes communication faster and easier, breaking down the barriers that have long hindered the deaf community.

The device is made using anodic aluminum oxide as the main material. It consists of four modules: a somatosensory recognition module on the front, a voice playback and recording module on the back, a holographic projection module on the top, and a language information translation and processing module on the inside. The rectangular shape of Silence, measuring 40cm long, 40cm wide, and 80cm high, makes it suitable for various public places.

The interaction with Silence is straightforward. Users present sign language to the device, which then translates it into the target spoken language for listeners. The listeners can input their voice messages into Silence, which will process and output the corresponding sign language. This seamless communication process ensures that both the deaf and the hearing individuals can effectively express themselves and understand each other.

The Silence project was initiated in July 2021 at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, Liaoning, China, and was completed in October 2021. Throughout the design process, the team faced several challenges, including capturing sign language actions, understanding sign language, transforming sign language into voice, and accurately imaging the voice content. These obstacles were overcome with the help of Kinet for capturing sign language actions, a comprehensive set of procedures for sign language transformation, and a z-type holographic projection imaging device for accurate imaging.

Silence has garnered recognition for its innovative design and impact on society. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Digital and Electronic Device Design category in 2022. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through the integration of art, science, design, and technology.

With Silence, Guangpeng Yue has revolutionized communication for the deaf, enabling them to participate fully in conversations and connect with the world around them. This groundbreaking device not only breaks down communication barriers but also enhances the lives of individuals with hearing and language disabilities, making the world a more inclusive and accessible place.
